About this calculator

fdbreakcalculator.com is an independent tool that works out what a depositor actually loses when closing a fixed deposit before maturity. It covers 44 institutions — 24 in India (banks, small finance banks, the Post Office and two NBFCs) and 20 in the United States (banks and credit unions).

Most penalty calculators stop at the penalty percentage. That is only part of the cost. In India the larger share of the loss usually comes from the rate downgrade — the difference between the rate you booked and the card rate for the shorter period you actually held. This tool shows the two steps separately, then compares the outcome with a loan against the same deposit.

What it does

  • Applies each bank's own penalty rule, not a single generic percentage
  • Shows the card rate for the period actually held, the penalty deducted, and the resulting rate
  • Compares the early-closure payout with the maturity value, so forgone future interest is visible
  • Prices a loan or overdraft against the same deposit for the remaining term
  • Handles the Post Office's four-tier early-closure rule and the senior citizen rate boost
  • Runs entirely in your browser — deposit amounts are never sent to a server

How the data is maintained

Penalty percentages, minimum holding periods and card-rate buckets are compiled from each bank's published deposit terms and re-checked quarterly. The dataset was last verified in October 2026. The full method, the formula we apply, the primary sources and the known limitations are documented on the methodology page.

We are not a bank, a distributor or a financial adviser. No bank pays for inclusion or for a particular figure.

Corrections

If a rate is out of date or a rule is wrong, email contact@fdbreakcalculator.com with the bank, the deposit type and a link to the current terms. Corrections are applied to the dataset and the verification date is updated.
