Axis FD Break Calculator — Premature Withdrawal Penalty

Axis Bank charges a 1.00% penalty on premature closure of a fixed deposit, applied to the interest rate rather than to the principal. Interest is recalculated at the card rate for the tenure the deposit actually completed, the 1.00% is deducted from that rate, and simple interest is paid for the days held. No interest is paid if the deposit is closed within 7 days. Senior citizens keep their additional rate on the card rate, but the penalty is unchanged. Axis’s card rate curve rises sharply after six months, so the earlier you close, the more the tenure downgrade costs you — a 3-year deposit closed in month 5 can lose more from the downgrade than from the 1.00% penalty itself. Axis also allows partial withdrawal on most deposits, which keeps the residual balance at the original rate.

The rate downgrade usually costs more than the 1.00% penalty

Axis card rates climb steeply between 3 months and 1 year. A 3-year deposit closed after 2 months is repriced at the 1-month rate, which is several percentage points below the booked rate — far more expensive than the 1.00% penalty.

When you look at the results, compare the "card rate for actual tenure" line with the "penalty" line. If the gap is large, waiting until the next tenure bucket is worth more than negotiating the penalty.

A flat 1% favours larger deposits

Because Axis does not use a ₹5 lakh threshold, a large deposit pays the same 1.00% as a small one. Against SBI and ICICI, that makes Axis cheaper for deposits above ₹5 lakh and more expensive below it.

If you hold deposits at more than one bank, put the amounts you are most likely to break at the bank with the cheaper rule for that size.

Closing an Axis FD

In Axis Mobile or Internet Banking, open Deposits → Fixed Deposit → select the deposit → Premature Closure. The confirmation screen shows the applicable rate and net payout before you commit.

Partial withdrawal is supported on most Axis deposits. The residual balance keeps the original rate and maturity, so it is usually the cheaper option if you only need part of the money.

How to close a Axis FD early

  1. Open Axis Mobile or Internet Banking and go to the Deposits section.
  2. Select the fixed deposit and choose Premature Closure or Partial Withdrawal.
  3. Check the rate and penalty shown on the confirmation screen.
  4. Confirm; proceeds are credited to the linked savings account.
  5. For joint deposits or deceased-holder claims, visit the branch with the passbook and ID.

Frequently asked questions

Axis Bank charges 1.00% on premature closure, applied to the interest rate applicable for the period the deposit actually ran. There is no amount-based threshold.

No. The penalty reduces the interest rate, not the deposit. The principal is repaid in full; only the interest is reduced.

Yes. Axis Mobile and Internet Banking both allow premature closure of your own deposits, and the confirmation screen shows the applicable rate and penalty before you confirm.

Yes, for deposits above ₹5 lakh. Axis charges a flat 1.00%, the same as SBI’s rate above ₹5 lakh, so they are equal there — but Axis is more expensive than SBI for deposits below ₹5 lakh, where SBI charges 0.50%.
