Freelancer Tax Estimator India — 44ADA vs Actual Expenses
Most freelancer calculators pick one method and give you a number. This freelancer tax estimator runs both: Section 44ADA presumptive taxation at 50% of gross receipts, and actual expenses, side by side. It also adds the income freelancers most often forget — interest on fixed deposits — because FD interest is taxed at your slab rate on top of your professional profit, and it can push you above the Section 87A rebate threshold. Enter your receipts once and see taxable income, tax after rebate and cess, your effective rate, and the four advance tax instalments you owe.
Estimate your tax
Advance tax schedule for your liability
Advance tax applies once the year's liability reaches ₹10,000. These are the cumulative amounts due, based on the estimate above.

44ADA eligibility, in one table
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Who can use it | Specified professions: engineering, medicine, law, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration, and other notified professions. Pure trading or manufacturing businesses use 44AD instead. |
| Turnover limit | ₹50 lakh of gross receipts. Raised to ₹75 lakh where cash receipts are 5% or less of total receipts. |
| Deemed profit | 50% of gross receipts. You may voluntarily declare more. |
| Books of account | Not required. No audit under Section 44AB if you stay within the limit and declare at least 50%. |
| ITR form | ITR-4 (Sugam), provided you have no capital gains, foreign assets or more than one house property. |
| Advance tax | Payable in four instalments if the liability is ₹10,000 or more. There is no exemption for 44ADA. |
44ADA versus actual expenses: where the break-even sits
The comparison is arithmetic, not judgement. 44ADA taxes 50% of your receipts. Actual-expense filing taxes receipts minus real costs. So the break-even is exactly a 50% expense ratio:
- Expenses below 50% of receipts: 44ADA taxes more than you actually earned. Actual-expense filing wins — provided you have proper invoices and can defend the claim.
- Expenses above 50% of receipts: 44ADA caps your taxable profit at half your receipts, so it wins even though your real profit is smaller.
- Expenses near 50%: choose 44ADA for simplicity. It removes books of account, audit risk and documentation entirely.
On ₹18,00,000 of receipts, 44ADA produces ₹9,00,000 of taxable professional income. If your real expenses are ₹4,00,000, actual-expense filing gives ₹14,00,000 — ₹5,00,000 more taxable income. Set the method selector above to "actual" to see the difference in tax, not just income.
The income freelancers forget: FD interest
Interest on a fixed deposit is taxed as Income from Other Sources at your slab rate, on top of professional profit. Because it stacks on top, it is taxed at your marginal rate — 30% plus surcharge and cess for most freelancers with healthy receipts. Two consequences catch people out:
First, it can push total income above ₹12,00,000 and wipe out the Section 87A rebate under the new regime, which is worth up to ₹60,000. Second, it counts toward the ₹50,000 TDS threshold under Section 194A (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens), so the bank starts deducting 10% even if your final liability is lower. Enter your FD interest in the field above to see both effects.
If you are deciding whether to break a deposit to fund a tax payment or a business cost, the FD break calculator shows what that exit actually costs — and the FD calculator shows what the deposit will be worth if you leave it alone.
Frequently asked questions
Section 44ADA lets specified professionals — including independent engineers, doctors, lawyers, architects, accountants, technical consultants and interior decorators — declare 50% of gross receipts as taxable profit. You do not maintain books of account or keep expense proofs, and you file ITR-4. The other 50% is treated as expenses whether you spent it or not.
₹50 lakh of gross receipts, raised to ₹75 lakh where cash receipts are 5% or less of total gross receipts. Because most freelancers are paid by bank transfer, the ₹75 lakh limit usually applies. Above the limit you must keep books and file ITR-3.
It depends on your expense ratio. If your real expenses are below 50% of receipts, 44ADA taxes more than you actually earned and actual-expense filing is better. If your real expenses are above 50%, 44ADA is better — it caps your taxable profit at half your receipts. The break-even is exactly 50% of gross receipts.
Yes, if your total tax liability for the year is ₹10,000 or more. Advance tax is paid in four instalments: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Missing an instalment attracts interest at 1% per month under Sections 234B and 234C.
Yes. Interest on fixed deposits is taxed as Income from Other Sources at your slab rate, on top of your freelance profit. It is often the income freelancers forget, which pushes them into a higher slab or above the Section 87A rebate threshold. It also counts toward the ₹50,000 TDS threshold under Section 194A.
No. The standard deduction applies only to salary and pension income. Professional income under 44ADA gets the 50% deemed-expense deduction instead, and no separate standard deduction.
ITR-4 (Sugam) if you use 44ADA or 44AD presumptive taxation and have no capital gains, foreign assets or more than one house property. Otherwise ITR-3. Filing ITR-4 is simpler because you do not need a balance sheet or profit-and-loss statement.
Registration is required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year (₹10 lakh in special-category states). Export of services is zero-rated but still needs registration above the threshold, and requires a Letter of Undertaking to supply without paying IGST.
Assumptions and limits
- Slabs are the FY 2025-26 rates announced in the Finance Act 2025: new regime 0/5/10/15/20/25/30% with a ₹4,00,000 exemption, old regime 0/5/20/30% with a ₹2,50,000 exemption.
- Section 87A rebate is applied as a full rebate up to ₹60,000 (new regime, income up to ₹12,00,000) or ₹12,500 (old regime, income up to ₹5,00,000). Marginal relief just above those thresholds is not modelled.
- Health and education cess of 4% is added. Surcharge above ₹50 lakh is not modelled.
- The estimator does not handle capital gains, house property, foreign income, presumptive income under 44AD, or deduction limits within 80C/80D.
- This is an estimate, not a tax return. Confirm with a chartered accountant before filing.
